MHSA's new Confined Space Entry Mobile Training Unit recently took to the streets, traveling up to the Ontario Fire College in Gravenhurst to make its debut with its first hands-on confined space entry training session.
The session took place on May 19 with a group of over 20 Firefighters from throughout the province, as they completed the second day of practical training in confined space entry techniques. Also in attendance were representatives from the Ministry of Labour and the First Nations Technical Services.
The unit itself is very impressive. The 40-foot container sits on a flat bed trailer and has been totally retrofitted inside to include piping, chambers and flumes to create realistic confined space entry environments and to simulate actually conditions.
Much thought was put into the design of the unit during the development phase, with input from many experts, who have had significant experience in confined space training. The goal was to try to make the conditions as realistic as possible during the training sessions.
In fact, the development of this new unit in many ways is a collaborative effort and the result of support from many of the System partners including the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, the Office of the Fire Marshal, the Industrial Accident and Prevention Association, the Farm Safety Association, the Pulp and Paper Association and the Electrical and Utilities Safety Association.Â
The MHSA also received much support from numerous external suppliers of health and safety equipment in the province, who in combination donated a significant amount of equipment to outfit the new unit.
Courses using the new Confined Space Entry Mobile Training Unit have already been booked throughout the remainder of 2005. Future plans include expanding the program to include training for all municipal services employees.
