"When a disaster has been addressed, what are some of the after effects that may cause harm to involved emergency workers, and how should they be tracked, monitored and addressed?"

Lessons learned from 9/11 at the Pentagon and the Anthrax incidents on Capitol Hill in October of 2001 will be presented.

Luncheon Keynote Speaker

The Honourable Steve Mahoney P.C.,
Chair, Workplace Safety & Insurance Board

Steve Mahoney has almost 3 decades of political experience in all four levels of government. He was first elected to public office in 1978 as a City Councilor in Mississauga and the Region of Peel. He was elected to the Ontario Legislature in 1987 where he served as the Chief Liberal Whip. His provincial political career included a strong run for the Leadership of the Liberal Party of Ontario. In April 2003, Prime Minister Jean Chrétien appointed Mr. Mahoney to the Federal Cabinet as Secretary of State for Crown Corporations including Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, Canada Post, Canada Lands, The Royal Canadian Mint, Queens Quay and The Old Port of Montréal.

Having served at every level of government in political office, Mr. Mahoney returned to the firm of Mahoney International, in 2004. The firm specializes in marketing of new products and concepts, and helps people develop their business strategies.

Steven is married, for 35 years, to Katie, a City and Regional Councilor in Mississauga. They have 3 sons, Aaron, Matthew and Christopher and 4 grandchildren.

He continues his active involvement in community life and currently serves on the Board of the Riverwood campaign to develop a new public garden in Mississauga. He has also been appointed to the Board of the Children’s Festival, and Hospice of Peel, an organization that helps people deal with end of life issues. He and his wife, Katie, are active supporters of Community Living Mississauga, helping handicapped children and Interim Place, helping abused women and children.

Avian Flu: The Next Human Pandemic

Dr. Sheela Basrur
Ontario's Chief Medical Officer of Health & Assistant Deputy Minister

What is this disease, how it is transported, what devastating effect it will have when it strikes, how is Toronto prepared to deal with it? What agencies will be involved?

Appointed Ontario's Chief Medical Officer in 2004, Dr. Basrur is also the Assistant Deputy Minister of Public Health, overseeing the work of 6,000 staff in 36 public health units and a wide health of public health services and programs.

She holds a Master of Health Science Degree from the University of Toronto, and is a specialist in community medicine.She is also a graduate from programs at Western and Dalhousie, and is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences, University of Toronto.

Dr. Basrur previously served as the medical Officer of Health for the City of Toronto, and before entering public health, she practiced medicine as a general practitioner in the City of Guelph Ontario.

Recently, in recognition for her efforts related to the public health community, she has received a Honourary Doctorate of Science Ryerson University, Honourary Diploma of Nursing, George Brown College, Woman of the Year Distinction Greater Toronto YWCA, and a Fellowship at Centennial College.
